LAUDE BSV STUDENTS EXCEED NATIONAL AVERAGES IN MATHS AND SCIENCE

As reported in the national news this week, according to the recent report showing the latest Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS 2019), it is very clear that Mathematics is a subject which needs improving for the majority of students in Spain. We believe that it is relevant, to highlight the fact that LAUDE British School of Vila-real students continue to obtain excellent results according to the 2019 International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) exams in the areas of Mathematics and Science.

The International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) is designed for students in international schools and schools with an international focus. We have been doing these tests for three years with Year 4, Year 6, Year 8 and Year 10 and we usually share this information only with the teachers in order to be able to enable closer monitoring and more rigorous target setting for our students. However, with this recent news about the general levels of Mathematics and Science in Spain, we felt it was relevant to share this information with our families as well.

Maths and Science Results

TIMSS 2019 test results for “4ª Primaria” in Spanish Curriculum show that Mathematics is the area in which Spanish students have the worst results. Spain has an average of 502 points in Mathematics and 511 in Science. This study shows that Spanish students have worsened in their performance in 2019 in Science and Mathematics compared to 2015, and they continue to be below the OECD and EU average, according to the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

Quite the opposite occurs with LAUDE BSV Secondary students, who in the last ISA 2019 exams obtained a total score of 589 in Mathematics, a performance above the average of all schools world-wide where the average score was 574 points.

Similarly, with regard to Science, LAUDE BSV Year 10 students obtained a total score of 625 points, placing our students well above the world-wide average for 15 year olds, which is 559 points.
